For
once, it wasn’t Britney Spears’ mammary glands on people’s minds. It wasn’t
her midriff. And it was not her mouth (although while we’re on the subject,
Spears did a far better job camouflaging any lip synching if there was any
going on before the crowd of 13,740 at the Alltel Arena on Saturday night).
It was her mane. To go with her "Dream Within a Dream" theme, Spears’
goldilocks were blanketed by a short, dramatic black wig that not only gave
her a completely different look, but also a completely different aura. The
overexposed Spears actually appeared mysterious, exotic even, as she did the
very same shimmying and shaking she always does. Not that everyone approved.
"What’s up with the hair? " screamed a little girl in Section 121. And then
during a video sequence between songs, in which a blond Britney was shown in
a fitful sleep where she repeated, "Go back! Go back!," a male voice felt
prompted to holler out, "Go back to blond! " But there was still plenty of
blond to go around. All the $10 posters and $35-$40 shirts featured blond
Britney . Before Britney came out, big screens broadcasted a video by
Shakira, aka Latin Britney . And then there was that Britney wannabe in the
opening act 3 rd Faze. While there was disagreement on Brit’s ’do, there
could be no debate on the quality of her show, which was categorically
ambitious and impeccably
performed. Spears has her act down, whether she’s dancing, gasping about
"Boys," disappearing into the floor for yet another crazy costume change (we
lost count after about five, but the best was the sparkly white bathing
suitlike outfit with a long pimp coat lined with the American flag for
"Lucky") or executing that Edward Scissorhands act she’s constantly doing
with her hands. There was one moment of planned spontaneity. Britney went
unplugged, belting out a pianobacked bluesy new tune called "Mystic Man,"
that she told the audience she had just written the other day. Wait, black
hair and writing blues music? Was this really Britney Spears? If there’s a
hit Britney didn’t hit, we can’t think of it. "Oops ... I Did It Again,"
"Crazy," "Overprotected" and "Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman " were present. So
was that trademark downhome, crinkle-face grin that Spears flashed again and
again as she made her way up and down the long catwalk into the audience and
then over the heads of the audience on a moving platform during her cover of
Joan Jett’s "I Love Rock ’N’ Roll." Yeah, OK, it really was her.
