Dozens of wannabe Britneys bellied up to the contest stage at the Cape Cod Mall yesterday afternoon. It was a blonde sea of lip gloss, pink sunglasses and insanely low-riding jeans.
Objective: replicate the complex Spears-ian concoction that has driven youth culture into a tummy-baring tizzy.Up for grabs: four precious tickets to the sold-out June 29 Britney Spears concert at the FleetCenter in Boston, courtesy of the mall, radio station 96.3 WRZE 'The Rose' and Pepsi.
Picture pandemonium in a pantsuit. Taut nerves and rhinestoned navels. Who would be the lucky look-alike?'Everybody loves Britney,' said contestant Adri Torres, 20, of Yarmouthport, before hitting the stage.
'She's got the moves, she's got the looks. This is what teenage America wants.'
Do you dress like this in real life?
'No, I really don't,' Torres said. 'This is the first time I've shown my tummy in god knows how long.'
Torres' brother Seth, 15, was also a contestant. He was wearing a skirt, fishnet stockings, and hey, what's that under your shirt?
'That is a bra,' Seth Torres said. 'There's a first time for everything.'
What do you think your chances are as a guy in this contest?
'Slim and none,' he said.
How did you get the courage to do this?
'I'm very secure with my manhood,' he said.
For some reason, Courtney Culnane, 17, of Chatham was wearing her underwear over her jeans. Did contest jitters cause the confusion?
'Actually, Britney wears her thong underwear outside her jeans in her 'I'm A Slave 4 U' video,' Culnane said.
Oh, of course. So you'd really love to win the tickets?
'Oh my god I love Britney Spears,' she said.
Why?
'She's really powerful for a young girl,' Culnane said. 'My grandparents and parents think she's too mature for her age and not a role model, but she's 20 years old and doing her own thing, and I think she's really cool.'
If you had a daughter would you let her dress like this?
'I think it's how you act, how you perceive yourself, not how you dress,' Culnane said. 'It can be dangerous if you're by yourself. But if you have a good body and act responsibly it's fine.'
Cindy Brazdis of Kingston drove her 14-year-old daughter Jenny to the contest.
Does all this belly 'n' stuff make a mother nervous?
'Well, yeah,' Brazdis said. 'I like to be with her when she's showing her belly. She can't go out without me with her belly hanging out.'
After hemming, hawing, a few sodas and a couple of commercial breaks, the judges reached a verdict.
The winner: Adri Torres!
The media swarmed Torres and asked the tough questions. Before the contest, you said that you hadn't shown your tummy in a long time. Does this victory mean more Britney-esque bared belly in the future?
'We'll see,' Torres said. 'This is a real confidence booster.'
