Some little girls grow up in the most delightful ways; others just age with
varying degrees of grace. When it comes to the maturing of post-teen pop idols,
every album and video offers new glimpses in the precarious art of growing up
(without growing out of the success that made these budding stars worth watching
in the first place).
Britney. The professionally promiscuous Jerkins has also added his production
skills to the pop queen's quest to become something Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.
It's a pity that the video for her latest single, "Overprotected,"
does little to advance the Britney cause. Where Brandy convincingly portrays a
puss in boots who is learning to use her claws, "Overprotected"
Britney is a whipless kitten longing to be eternal jailbait. Her lips are as
pink as fresh bubblegum, her voice as modulated as Minnie Mouse's, her sexuality
still that of the calculating nymphet. Humbert Humbert would be the first to say
that, at 20, she's too old to play the Lolita role, but Britney offers little to
replace it. She ("she" being a collective noun that includes her
various handlers) hesitates at the dividing line between girl and grown-up -- a
precarious place, for sure, with Madonna on one side and Baby Jane on the other.
