REVIEW: Britney Spears in Melbourne November 11, 2009
Lets start by getting one thing straight. Rebekah Devlin, who started what quickly developed into Britney-gate this week in Australia, clearly got it very, very wrong. At the Britney Spears show tonight at Rod Laver Arena, there were no mass walk-outs, there were no disgruntled fans and the audience was genuinely entertained.
Just for the record, I am not a Britney fan but ‘Circus’ is a very good show. Forget the “but she mimes” argument. It is irrelevant for Britney. She is a popstar. She has never pretended to be a serious musical act like Radiohead. She is what she is and has never denied it.
Keep in mind at parts of their shows, Cher has lip-synched, Madonna lip-synchs, even Roger Waters did it. So lets just eliminate that from the scorecard and score the Britney show for what it is … a very entertaining show aimed at her core fans.
If you are a Britney fan, you are going to love ‘Circus’. It is over two hours of escapism and yes it is a real circus. Actually, if Ms. Devlin focused on the freak show featuring the midget or an amputee on a trampoline she might have been able to beat-up a better story. Did she even notice that? Not that it mattered. It was visually compelling.
Yes, a Circus it truly is, with magicians, acrobats, a tightrope and … was that Perez Hilton dressed up as The Queen?
The costume changes are covered up with musical segways. One featured Marilyn Manson ‘Sweet Dreams’ and another Michael Jackson ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something’.
Lets give a special shout-out to the two kids in the front row. Britney’s children Sean and Jayden watched what Mom did for a living with Mom’s new beau Jason Trawick . For the record Ms Devlin, Jayden left earlier so your headline tomorrow should read “Even Britney’s Kid Can’t Stand Her”. Sean left before the encore, so you can beat that up into a headline as well.
In Vegas, this show would be up for “show of the year”. In Perth, based on a one-woman jury, it doesn’t rate at all. Melbourne, the home of Australian theatre, accepted another good show.
Britney is more than 90 shows into a world tour with Circus. How funny that Ms Devlin wasted her 15 minutes of fame on something that has never pretended to be anything more than a pop show.

i Don’t know what the critics get into their heads when bashing her. They are f^&%$ up jealous and gonna make a paycheck full of hate when they do it, is all i can figure.
that devil reporter has never done a minute’s professional choreography is all i can say,. it’s doubtful she sings and i question her abiltiy as a critic if all she can report is slanderous garbage. what a DEVIL!

And P.S. somebody learned out there please educate people on choreograpgy and singing. it is physically impossible to sing her tracks at the tempo they are played and released as Pop tracks, dance at their tempo right along at the same pace with all of the dancers. it is physcially impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It amazes me the ignorance of people who can’t sing or dance and lack the insight into what goes into a pop performance like Circus . you can’t physcally do what she is doing and sing at that pace. the dancers also have to have a routine that goes with exact lyrics and beats. they have to be in sync!!!!!!!!!!

With all due respect, I disagree. It CAN be done. No, it is not an opera, but singing and dancing simultaneously can be done. And personally, I think it SHOULD be done. Britney is, no doubt, a fabulous entertainer, but I think she sells herself short sometimes. I believe she is totally capable of singing her show live, but she chooses not to. And I think that’s a poor choice considering her dancing in this tour isn’t even full-out. I’ve been folowing this tour since day one and her dancing, in my opinion, lacks the energy of her past performances by 50%.
I, personally, would love to see Britney rise to the challenge and retire the backing track. She can totally do it, and considering how crazy her fans go whenever she actually sings live (even if it’s only for 15 seconds), I think nothing would make them happier.

britney use to sing and dance at the sametime shes done it soo many times i think shes sold herself short this tour but i also think this is a warmup tour to get her use to doing things again i have seen some tour footage an shes dancing her ass off and some she doesnt look as into it but she use to sing like 3/4 songs live on her tour so hopefully next tour she’ll do that as for singing britney isnt pushing herself vocally for some reason and when she does she wont release the songs hopefully we will get the real britney back next album

I agree with you Terri…Thats how Ive looked at it….Looking at the bigger picture of her personal life and career over the past few years….All the ups and downs shes been through….I do think she is just warming up…I mean she went so long without even doing anything….I myself have been through dark times…and i couldnt imagine coming out of one of those doing well but having to do well like her and perform,make record,sing,dance do this do that….its prolly really hard….In time in time….I think we will all see her get back on her feet….But for now I think she is doing remarkable and she is still shattering competition and shes not even at her best…Dont you all agree…Shes one bitch to me reckoned with
