CONCERT REVIEW: Britney Yet to Hit Stride

Don’t call it a comeback quite yet.Britney Spears still isn’t all the way there. At least not from the standpoint of the kickoff concert of her much-anticipated Circus tour – her first trek in five years – at the New Orleans Arena Tuesday night.
While she avoided the train wreck that was her 2007 MTV Video Music Awards appearance, a visibly nervous Spears, performing in front of enthusiastic fans near her Kentwood, La., hometown, never really hit her old stride.
The circus-themed extravaganza, played out across an adventurous three-ring set, opened with an extended introduction featuring clowns, acrobats and jugglers, making it way too long before Spears finally hit the stage.
Descending from above in a red ringmaster-meets-dominatrix outfit to sing her hit “Circus,” she showed that her body was tight, even if her dancing always wasn’t. Indeed, throughout the show’s four sections, there was a lot more strutting than real choreographic feats from Spears. And there was a decided lack of joy in her performance, which felt labored at times.
Lack of Engagement
It didn’t help that she hardly engaged the audience, not addressing them at all until after her lone encore, “Womanizer,” performed in sexed-up cop uniforms. Given that Spears probably doesn’t do much live singing either, it left a definite chill in the air.
The show was all about the spectacle, with vibrant visuals, illusions, Cirque du Soleil-inspired aerialists and an army of dancers taking some of the focus – and the pressure – away from Spears. There was one major miscue, when Spears didn’t join two backup singers for a rendition of Duffy’s “I’m Scared” – apparently because the lyric sheet went missing onstage.
When she wrapped the concert about 90 minutes after emerging, she seemed more relieved than anything that it was all over. (BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO)

It was a great first show Britney put on for her fans. Her coinfidence seems to have shown but we all know first times are always a nerve wracking experience. The more Britney performs, the more her confidence will boost in her. It was her first show in 5 yrs. Let’s cut her some slack. She did amazing and we can look forward to many more amazing Britney shows in the months to come. I want the DVD concert Now. I’m excited. I’ll definitely get it. Love u Britney. Congrats on a great first night!
I don’t understand why they keep bashing Britney Spears for that. She has shown her talents more than enough, and as I read from other she did an amazing job. I have my tickets for this Saturday in Miami, and I an very impatience to see her and enjoy the show. She is the only one entertainer who can pull out a show like this. I am very happy she got back. We need her healthy and good. Congratulations to her!!! We root for her!!!!
It’s her first show in 5 years, give her a break! I can’t stand People!! They’ve been jerks to Britney ever since she cut them off & stop giving them exclusives & interviews. Plus i’ll never forget all the hard ass kissing they did with K-Fat. Perez gave a better review than them. Atleast Perez went into detail. They bash her but are so vauge about it. Give example of why you think she was nervous or not into it.
I can’t stand Perez, but he’s been real hard on her so I’ll take his word on it that she was into it over his. About her talking Britney never was a big talker in her shows.
Are you mad that People is telling its readers and the public that she hasn’t hit her stride yet? I would much rather hear a People review than a say Perez Hilton because they are harsh ON EVERYONE and don’t have NO reason to lie! They have to tell people the good AND the bad of the concert.
Thanks People for telling me the TRUTH about her concert and not a misconception that all is well and that it’s worth it, RIGHT NOW. Plus, it’s not like they are saying don’t go; they are simply telling us that she hasn’t hit it yet, that it will get there. You have to take the good with the bad and realize that ALL people don’t have the same perception of the concert.
The first shows usually aren’t well oiled machines.
Give her a second to feel it all out. Things tend to go wrong at the beginning.
i think this concert was a comeback, or at least the beginning of a great new start. Yeah, she lip synched, but did you hear the crowd screaming and singing along with her?! they absolutely did not care and neither did I–> http://tinyurl(dot)com/BritneyCircusTourClips
hopefully she’ll sing live more often in future concerts. But the stage setup was amazing and Britney definitely worked it and put on a great performance!!! LOVE YOU BRIT!!!!! U rock!
I really don’t understand why you would post such bad reviews whereas there has been dozens of great reviews raving about the show published today. Is it really a fan site ?
what the fuck does the people magazine know anyway i got it lets not buy any people mags for a while and lets see how they like losing money ! FUCK THEM the show was GREAT and she RECLAIMED HER ROLE AS POP PRINCESS or show i say she made it to the QUEEN OF POP (sorry Madonna) i love you britney cant wait to see you in NY
Britney has been in this business for 10 years and done so many concerts that im sure she her has lost count. This tour is the first in 5 years for Britney after going through a harrowing couple of years. With every performer their first few tour dates especially the first are always going to have alot of nerves and feel uneasy, unsure about how its all going to go if the audience is going to percieve it how the performers want them to. Britney went out there probably so nervous and scared but she gave them the show she has been working incredibly hard on and from what iv seen and heard she did it brilliantly and the audience loved every bit. The people that count in this are the fans in general and the fans who are at these shows and as long as they love the show and love Britney and what shes giving to them while theyre there watching her then thats all that matters. All that matters to Britney when she is up on that stage is pleasing everyone and making people thnk wow. As each show comes Britney will radiate more and more confidence in herself and the show and will mix things up more thats what performers do they do they add things as the tour goes on. These critics need to let her get on with her job i know it seems to kill them to say well done Britney youve dont amazingly well and your concert was brilliant because they just want to see her fail writing about success in Britneys life doesnt sell scandal and breakdowns do i find it disgusting after all shes been through they cant just let her go. Britney is working her arse off and for one wont stand for her being hurt by pathetic reviews of a show that is what has been described as spectacular. All you fans who are lucky enough to have a ticket to see this special person amazing performer who is a great talent i hope you enjoy it and take in the experience she gives to you because its definately a once in a life time thing….good luck Britney you never went anywhere but you have shown and will continue to show youre well and truly here to stay
ITS HER FIRST STOP IN HER CONCERT!! HASNT ANYONE BEEN TO A THEATER AND WATCHED A PLAY THE FIRST NIGHT, IT ISNT ALWAYS THE BEST ONE, SAME THING HERE! SHE DID AMAZZZING, AND SHELL BE GETTING EVEN BETTER!! IM SO PROUD OF BRITNEY!!!! TALK ABOUT A COMBACK AND IM SURE CRITICS ARE EATING THEIR LOAD OF CRAP HAHAA LOL
bullshit
she looked fine not nervous wtf i hate ”people” now
Sherrick smack yourself back into reality!! People is NOT harsh on everyone. When Britney had deals w/ them they weren’t harsh on her. This is the same crap mag that’s been kissing Kevin’s fat ass for close to 2 years now.
What one writer from People has to say is NOT the truth, just his or her’s opinion.
Furthermore People’s review does not match up at all w/ so many other reviews not only from fans but from other papers & magazine’s as well. That’s why People is bullshit!!
she looks happy . but who knows the inside
she is always the best.good luck brit.
